Are Athletes Obligated?

Athletes for Hope has got athletes talking about whether they’re obligated to give back to the community.

NBA player now commentator Charles Barkley once famously said “I’m not a role model… Just because I dunk a basketball doesn’t mean I should raise your kids.”

It appears more and more that Barkley is in the minority with several athletes running their own charity foundations or spending time supporting charitable causes

Please check it out – Are Athletes Obligated?

Some of the biggest names in sports have responded – Tony Hawk, Mario Lemieux, Ben Roethlisberger, Steve Nash, Alonzo Mourning, Mia Hamm & Jeff Gordon.

Wonder what Tiger Woods feelings on the subject are?

NBA leading the way again – Virtual Jerseys

NBA Virtual Jerseys

Check out the latest post from the NBA Facebook Fan page (1.6M fans and counting), they are now offering Virtual NBA Jerseys as Facebook Gifts!

Awesome idea from the NBA as it allows Facebook users to send a digital NBA Jersey to a friend using Facebook credits.  To purchase simply go to the Facebook gift shop and search for NBA, there is a selection of team and player jerseys available.

We’d like to see the NBA release sales results on digital jerseys like they do for actual jerseys.   Could Facebook stars like Shaq, Bosh & Nash outshine big names like Kobe & LeBron who have shied away from the social media spotlight?

Trash Talk 2.0?

As Sports Geek I’m keeping an eye on how athletes are interacting via social media.  Absolutely loving this status update from Steve Nash ahead of the NBA Season tipoff.  He has even included a new @mention to LA Clipper Baron Davis that Facebook “borrowed” from Twitter, so we’ll forgive Steve the poor spelling.

Facebook Tip: To include a @mention in Facebook type @ then the person or fan page name and it will be included as a link in your update.  Try it with Sports Geek and send us a Facebook shoutout ;)
