What is Gamification?

What is Gamification?  Bringing game elements to solve problems or better make things fun.

Sean spoke at Churchill Club last week on Gamification with Marigo Raftopolous  (Founder of Strategic Games Lab) and Patrick McQuaid (Project Director at NAB) who’s currently exploring the implementation of gamified projects at NAB.

What are examples of gamification?

  • DreamTeam & SuperCoach – Fantasy Sports genre
  • Apps like Foursquare, Yelp – gamifying social exploring – checking into bars & cafes
  • Runkeeper – gamifying your jogging experience
  • Frequent Flyer systems are ages old but early forms of gamification

Where is it popping up?

     - Corporate engagement & training – encouraging staff to participate with some fun game elements.

- Sports with Fan Engagement – we’ve developed Sports DP (Digital Passion) which is a social media frequent flyer system for sports fans.

- Minnesota Timberwolves were the world’s first sports team to gamily their sports fan base with Sports DP as fans tweets were scored at the 2011 NBA Draft in June 2011.  Check out the West Coast Eagles Sports DP rollout called The Swoop.

Expect as membership & stadiums get smarter to see gamification come into play with attendance, public transport, how much your spend – might lead to rewards like invite to team dinner or function.

Foursquare Super Swarm Sunday, does it work?

Last year Foursquare was lucky enough to partner up with the NFL & offer badges for #SB45.

Over 200,000 people checked into to Super Bowl Sunday, but this year like all other advertisers Foursquare has to pay to leverage off “Super Bowl” which comes at a hefty price tag ($3.5M for ad sports like these already released).

They have partnered up with American Express & Pizza Hut to offer this deal when checking into Super Swarm Sunday.

Is this deal too complicated & the right offer on Super Bowl Sunday?

To claim you must follow these steps:

  • Check-in to Super Swarm Sunday – Easy (although it can be hard to find the location initially on iPhone at least)
  • Sync your Amex card – Will people do this on Super Bowl Sunday? Do people have privacy concerns?
  • Buy a pizza from Pizza Hut with Amex. – Will people need pizza after a huge Super Bowl party spread?  If they do wont they go to local pizzaria?
Although I’m sure a lot of Foursquare users will check in to collect another badge (90,000 so far) it will be interesting to see if the people follow through to deliver for Pizza Hut & Amex.
What do you think?  Why did you check-in to Super Swarm Sunday?

Why I don’t recommend Real Madrid on Facebook

Guest post from Dion Anthony (@dion_anthony) – a member of @SportsGeekDI program

So by now, you’re probably all aware that everyone’s favourite social media website, Facebook, has undergone some privacy and “check-in” changes. After only just releasing Deals less than 6 months ago, Facebook has plans to switch it off due to it’s severe lack of popularity.

On top of that, the social media site has updated the privacy settings surrounding profiles, letting users keep out who they want to keep out and making it easier to untag those photos that you don’t ever what to see the light of day!

What do you recommend?

One of the main changes that is being rolled out is recommendations.  This new feature will allow users to recommend venues on Facebook similar to Yelp.  For a venues such as ANZ Stadium, the move will be brilliant, allowing fans and visitors to recommend the stadium for anything from last round’s Sydney Swans game to next years John Farnham Comeback Tour!

Real Madrid hardly recommended behaviour

Of course with the good comes the bad. Unfortunately for Real Madrid C.F., they have decided to use the recommendations feature as a way for fans to express their feelings about the Spanish super club’s latest on-field result. Doable? Yes.

Effective and correct use of the addition? Hardly.

A simple comparison between the numbers of fans that “44 were here” will attest to that.

Hardly recommended Facebook work by Real Madrid

Sports Geek’s take

We saw this post when Dion was at Sports Geek HQ on Monday.  Sports clubs need to look hard at whether they should have there address on their Facebook page.  Do you want your fans leaving recommendations after a loss or opposition fans leaving “so-called” recommendations?  We can see what Real Madrid are trying to do but agree with Dion not terribly effective.

Additionally Facebook is changing it’s focus with regard to location, does this bring Foursquare back in the frame for sports?

What do you think?
