Connecting sports, fans & sponsors using technology

Sports Geek in USA

In January 2010 I toured Los Angeles, Dallas & New York to study how fans are engaged both by sporting teams and sporting facilities.  Whether it be through promotions or fan connectivity during the game, here are my top 5 highlights from #sportsgeektrip (as it was hashtagged on Twitter)

1. American Airlines Center

Catching up with AAC CEO Brad Mayne, not only to see Dirk Nowitzski score his 20,000th NBA point (right) from a “the” corporate suite, but seeing how the facility operates behind the scenes during the Dallas Stars game.

2. BCS Championship Game

I turned up to the Rose Bowl to study the fans and the numerous promotions at the ESPN tailgate party.  Saw some great event promotion ideas but better still ended up attending the game with 94,000 college football fans.

3. Cowboys Stadium

The new standard has been set for stadium design & amenities.  Cowboys Stadium is like everything in Texas – BIG!  I was lucky enough to see the Cowboys in practice with the world’s largest HD TV (right) in effect providing fake crowd noise to simulate playing conditions.

4. Madison Square Garden

A venue with so much history and character although it definitely needs the impending facelift they have planned.  The staff at MSG are switched-on when in comes to connecting with fans via web & mobiles.

5. NHL

I had never seen a game NHL game until the #sportsgeektrip. The NHL has embraced the digital world in connecting with their fans and it is paying off.  The LA Kings, Dallas Stars & New York Rangers all provided great entertainment with  passionate hockey fans cheering them on.
