Facebook Timeline: Another 21 Reviews

Facebook Timeline has taken the world by storm. With it’s official release just a week old now, we’ve already reviewed 42 sporting teams and personalities and how they’ve implemented Timeline. Today, let’s have a look at the next wave of adopters and what updates our early adopters have made.

The New

Pittsburgh Penguins

The NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins are absolutely flying on the ice, and are showing some great stuff on Facebook. The apps used by the Pens are stock standard, but with the return of superstar Sidney Crosby after some career-threatening concussions, the cover photo being a shot of Sid the Kid is a great move by the Penguins in the lead-in to the playoffs. Very inspirational for players and fans having the captain back at the business end of the season.

Dallas Mavericks

Moving on to the reigning Champion Dallas Mavericks now, who are one of the rare teams to display both a great cover picture and use the apps feature effectively. Unlike most teams, the Mavs don’t feature the “Like” button as one of their first three or four apps, but have aMavs Radio app, where fans from around the world can listen live, and a Championship Collection, where fans can relive the ring ceremony as well as purchase they own Mavs Championship gear. All in all, it’s probably the most complete Facebook Timelines in the sporting industry at the moment.

Dallas' Instagram inspired cover photo is a swish!

Arsenal

Arsenal are another team who have nailed their cover photo. Not only do the Gunners have arguably the best cover photo for a team, with league leading scorer Robin Van Persie calmly slotting one of his 26 goals, but they also have one of the best apps on Facebook. The app, called the 125 Project, which gives Arsenal fans a chance to write about their best memories of Arsenal in their 125 year history. It’s a remarkable addition to the Timeline and engages fans and let’s them contribute in a very meaningful fashion.

The AFL Footy Show

In our last post, we showed you the organisations that, more or less, were putting Facebook Timeline to great use. Unfortunately, the AFL Footy Show hasn’t got the memo. There’s no cover photo, limited apps, and not a great understanding of the whole concept of Facebook.

Milwaukee Brewers and the San Francisco Giants

Two more examples that, like the Footy Show, probably aren’t following the rules of Facebook Timeline are Major League Baseball teams. Most MLB franchises that have Facebook Timelines have a uniform cover photo of their home ballpark, with the vantage point generally being from a high standpoint above home plate. The two examples used here are the Milwaukee Brewers and the San Francisco Giants. Both use classy stadium shots, but unfortunately, break the rules.

As a simple cover photo, it’s fantastic, because it’s a great shot of the stadium, and most baseball fans are blindly faithful to their teams and their home field. Unfortunately where these cover shots fall down are with the inclusion of the team URL that, like Shaq’s cover photo, and as I said above, breaks the rules of Facebook Timeline cover photos.

The Brewers can nearly get away with this one, as their URL isn’t technically in the cover photo, but you get the idea; URLs aren’t intended for cover photos, they should go in the “About” section.

Indianapolis Colts, Washington Redskins

With the number one pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, the Indianapolis Colts are desperately trying to build their fan base up to be as dedicated as they were during the Peyton Manning Era. To do this on Facebook, they use a Path to the Draft app, which is rather effective, as well as a great cover photo, showing off the NFL’s new Nike-branded football apparel. Ironically, the Washington Redskins, who pick second in this draft after a blockbuster trade with the St. Louis Rams, employ a similar cover photo on their Facebook Timeline.

Kentucky Wildcats

Here we have yet another dedication to greatness in the cover photo, and why not? The Wildcats did just complete one of the best years in school history with a national title, using their cover photo to immortalise their five starters. Brilliant work here.

San Antonio Spurs

We look at the last of the “new boys” here (new boys being the ones not featured in the original post), with the San Antonio Spurs. In the middle of putting together another great season in the NBA, the Spurs’ cover photo is a definite winner, and, on this list, the only franchise that has their fans as the centre of attention on the cover photo. What a great way to create loyalty with fans, by visually showing them how important they are to the team. Another savvy move by the NBA’s savviest franchise.

The Updated

Los Angeles Lakers

From our last review, we can see a number of teams have updated their cover photos, due either to the incumbent being outdated, or an important event for the franchise has occurred. Here at Sports Geek, we know it’s important to update the cover photo and keep it relevant to help connect with fans better and create traffic toward the page.

The first updated Timeline we see just below is from the Los Angeles Lakers, who have updated their cover photo from the Kobe Bryant #maskedmamba beauty, to the Andrew Bynum Player of the Week dedication, to a dedication picture to former Laker Jamaal Wilkes, who has just been elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame class of 2012. At the moment, the Lakers are one of the leaders in the clubhouse for creative Timeline cover photos and deserve much kudos.

The Lakers are one of the best when it comes to effective cover photos.

Note: After Kobe Bryant’s big game yesterday against the Clippers, the current Lakers cover photo looks like this:

Perth Wildcats

The first of the Sports Geek clients to appear in this post is the Perth Wildcats. With the NBL Finals nearing it’s tip-off date, the Wildcats use their cover photo as a call-to-arms for fans to get behind the ‘Cats as they push for the NBL Championship.

The 'Cats have a great call-to-arms on the Facebook Timeline cover photo.

FC Bayern München

FC Bayern München, like the Lakers, are a team that uses the cover photo to promote current events that have an affect on the organisation. Earlier this week, their cover photo featured superstar French winger, Franck Ribéry;

Stand up, if you love Franck Ribéry.

But with German striker Mario Gomez resigning until 2016, the Bavarians dedicate their cover photo to the Bundesliga’s leading scorer for season 2011-12. Great stuff, Bayern. Note: They use their apps very intelligently also, with a link to their impressive Allianz Arena, and a Facebook game titled, the new FC Bayern Star!

Mario Gomez leads the Bundesliga in goals this season.

Carlton

The Carlton Football Club are being quite nostalgic and proud of their heritage with their Facebook Timeline so far. Initially, the image showed some past captains playing for Carlton, ending in a picture of current captain, Chris Judd (see the image here). Now, with coach Brett Ratten preparing to make history as he coaches the Blues for the 100th time, the Carlton Facebook Timeline cover photo is a dedication to some past coaches leading up to Brett Ratten. Again, the image is a very classy one (like the ones mentioned above) and sticks to the same theme as the club’s official website.

San Diego Chargers

Over to the States now, as we take a look at the San Diego Chargers. Even though their apps are quite basic, the last post we had on Facebook Timelines featured the Chargers, who had a dedication to retired guard Kris Dielman as their cover photo. Now, with the NFL in offseason, their cover photo features the new uniform, designed by Nike, that the NFL has just released. Again, it’s just a simple step of having the current photo relevant to the state of affairs of the organisation, but it’s effective nonetheless.

Greater Western Sydney

The AFL’s new boys, the Greater Western Sydney Giants, are pushing forth into the somewhat unknown of Sydney’s Western suburbs, and are pushing their promotional material hard. The picture below isn’t their current cover photo, but as you see, it tries to play on the popularity of West Coast’s Nic Naitanui, co-captain Callan Ward, and push fans to attend their round 3 clash at home against the high-flying Eagles.

While we generally say don’t use the cover photo for any sort of promotional activity, we give the new boys a break here as they set about building their fan base.

North Queensland Toyota Cowboys

Our second client the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys, who this week have set their Facebook Timeline cover photo showing a try scored in last week’s win over the Canberra Raiders. We love this sort of team spirit photo at Sports Geek, and imagine that the Cowboys’ fans love it, too!

Adelaide Crows

Just like the Cowboys, fellow Sports Geek client the Adelaide Crows are taking advantage of their winning ways. Dating back to the NAB Cup competition, the Crows are winners of seven straight under first year coach Brenton Sanderson, which means that their fans are probably used to seeing the image that currently graces their Facebook page.

Can the Crows continue their winning ways?

West Coast Eagles

The Eagles’ Nic Naitanui and Josh Kennedy both dominated the Western Bulldogs on Sunday at Etihad Stadium, so why not feature them on the Facebook page? With over 110,000 Facebook fans now, the West Coast Eagles are another smart Sports Geek client regularly updating their cover photo.

Nic Naitanui is a huge fan favourite for the Eagles

Melbourne Storm and the South Sydney Rabbitohs

The last two team Facebook pages that we will cover here are the Melbourne Storm and South Sydney Rabbitohs. Both teams were all smiles last week after victories in their Round 5 match ups, giving the fans what they wanted with the cover photos as well. Which was, of course, pictures from their triumph.

Greg Inglis is a superstar

Hopefully, from the 60-odd Facebook Timelines we at Sports Geek have looked at, we’ll leave you, now, with three lessons to keep in mind:

  • The cover photo is for one thing and one thing only: A cover photo. That means no URLs, no promotions, no sales. That goes in the About section.
  • A classy and eye catching cover photo, as well as relevant and timely updates of that space will keep fans interested and drive traffic back to your Facebook page. And lastly;
  • Like Arsenal’s 125 Year campaign, and Dallas’ championship package app, be creative and unique with your app building. It can greatly increase repeat visitors and, as the ultimate aim always is, please the fan.

My ‘Stormy’ Night

Don’t let the title of this post fool you, because the night I’m referring to was, in fact, a fine-weathered evening, where I was lucky enough to shadow the Melbourne Storm’s Digital Media Manager, Daniel Pinne.

One of the Storm's forays forward in a see-sawing first half at AAMI Park vs. South Sydney

Thanks to the work that Sean has put in with the Storm and their social media endeavours, I got invited along to the Storm’s home-opener at AAMI Park on Sunday night against another Sports Geek client, the South Sydney Rabbitohs. As I strive to gain employment in a similar role that Daniel has at the Storm, my goal for the night was just to watch Daniel closely to see how he manages the Storm’s presence on social media on game day, how he interacts with the digital community, and what are the best practices to undertake in the fast-paced environment of professional sport. Straight away, I was impressed.

Daniel had everything covered from the moment I arrived until well after the match had finished. From filming segments on Storm members filing into the stadium, to taking snapshots for the Facebook page and live-tweeting the game, the action was non-stop. It became evident to me early on that, to be a successful digital media manager for a professional sporting club, one has to have great time management skills, a passion for the game, passion for social media and some imagination to boot.

One of the interesting moments for the night was seeing how the Facebook and Twitter updates were handled differently, with best practice for Facebook being three posts, published before the game, at half time and finally, at the final whistle, while the Twitter updates were more spontaneous and corresponded to the action of the game.

Once the game was over, the action moved from the press box to the conference room, where the Digital Media Manager’s job still was

Best word to describe Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy; fierce!

not over, with the team press conference still needing to be filmed. Being my first time in a press conference, I was definitely more than a little nervous, even turning my phone off to stop any interruptions (even though I knew I had it on silent, I was being overly cautious!). As a keen sports fan and occasional sports writer myself, it was great to see the kind of effort and level of professionalism associated with press conferences.

So, what did I actually do, you ask? Well, other than watching Daniel’s every move and trying to glean as much knowledge from him that I could, I was tasked with taking some team shots from the Storm boys running out of the change room and onto the field, as well as some game-time shots to be used for the Facebook account, which was a great way to learn what works, what doesn’t, and also, staying out of rugby league players’ way when they are running onto the pitch!

As a final note, I’d like to thank both Daniel and, of course, Sean, for inviting me along to what was an excellent night, both on the field with the Storm getting the result, and me personally, as I build toward beginning my career.

Facebook Timeline, NASCAR, the #NBA and All-Star Weekend headline #BODSW

After using last week’s #bodsw to get back into the swing of things, the first #bodsw of the Autumn season is chock full of great stories of how social media has a huge impact on professional sport. Along with looking at social media’s impact on NASCAR and the NBA, we delve into more of the Pinsanity, and the new Facebook timeline.

Facebook Timeline: The story of your life

While Facebook timeline has been around for a while for personal Facebook accounts, it is only now being rolled out for corporate pages on Facebook. This means that there will be many changes, trials and re-trials on how to get the most out of the new Facebook format.

The Village Agency give a nice wrap-up on all the new features, changes, and how brands and marketing professionals can prepare for them. For more insight into Facebook and Timeline’s change, check out the Facebook Marketing Talk.

NASCAR driver Brad Keselowski tweets from the racetrack

We’ve all heard of tweeting from planes, trains and automobiles. As passengers. But tweeting from the NASCAR Daytona 500 race as a competitor? Well, that’s exactly what Penske Racing drive Brad Keselowski did after the race was red-flagged after an accident involving former F1 driver, Juan Pablo Montoya. Pretty impressive place to be tweeting from. Definitely more interesting than me tweeting from my living room.

Interesting to see how this tweet will affect social media policies in NASCAR and other sporting organisations around the world.

The NBA is a world leader in leveraging Social Media

Even though the Forbes 50 most valuable sporting teams list only has one NBA franchise (the Los Angeles Lakers) represented, the National Basketball Association leads the pack in terms of social media excellence.

The NBA has a combined 15.8 million Twitter followers and Facebook likes, and is renowned in the digital space for driving a lot of traffic to the league’s YouTube channel. The Wrap’s Lucas Shaw gives a great run down on how the NBA is dominating social media. Be sure to check it out.

Pinsanity: The new revolution of sports teams on Pinterest

We gave you quite the spiel on Pinterest during last week’s #bodsw, but still it continues to grow. As sporting teams now understand the

Are you on Pinterest yet?

value of social media in building brand loyalty and engaging with their fans and community, more an more franchises are becoming accustomed to joining new ventures and learning how to leverage them effectively to build their brands.

Mashable’s Sam Laird gives us a nice article about how sports teams are joining in the #Pinsanity and using the new image-sharing network to increase their web traffic and read with fans.

On a personal level, check out our own Sports Geek Pinterest page and have a look at our Clients pinboard. Congratulations clients Melbourne Storm, South Sydney Rabbitohs, Perth Wildacts, North Queensland Cowboys, West Coast Eagles and the Adelaide Crows for getting into the #Pinsanity!

Clipper Darrell – Now just Darrell

A staple at the Staples Center for the better part of the last 12 years, the man known to Los Angeles Clippers fans as “Clipper Darrell” has been asked to drop the moniker by the Clippers’ front office. What do you think of the PR move from the Clippers and it’s effect on the brand?

Best on Ground

With the lauding of the NBA and their excellent use of social media, this week’s best on ground can only be given to one event; the All-Star Weekend. To really create an amazing online experience associated with the festivities in Orlando, the NBA created their All-Star Pulse feature displayed on NBA.com (shown below) that tracked trending topics from a range of social media services and let fans voice their opinion.

Furthering their efforts, the NBA handed the voting rights over to the fans for the 2012 Dunk Contest, letting them vote the winner of the contest via Twitter, SMS and website voting.

For more information on the social media craze surrounding the NBA, check out this story on social media’s impact on the All-Star Weekend.

The NBA had all things social media covered at the 2012 #AllStarWeekend

Video of the Week

Sticking with the NBA theme of this week’s #bodsw by making one Gatorade’s new #winfromwithin ad campaigns the video of the week. Featuring 6-time NBA Champion Michael Jordan, the ad features footage from the infamous “Flu Game” against the Utah Jazz. Enjoy and remember, #winfromwithin.

So this does it for another week of #bodsw. Hope you all enjoyed it and maybe even learnt a thing or two!

#BODSW is back with #SuperBowl XLVI, Pinterest, and some #Linsanity

Welcome back, again, to Sports Geek’s #BODSW. After a hefty break over the summer months while I was following in Sean’s footsteps,

Excuse the hat, but wouldn't you be wearing it in minus-16 degree weather?!

conducting my own #sportsgeektrip in the USA, including watching Green Bay’s Matt Flynn throw 6 touchdowns in minus-16 degree weather, the (at the time) 2-12 Washington Wizards upset the 12-2 OKC Thunder, and catching a Knicks game before all the #Linsanity, we are back and better than ever, as this week we have a look at the social media impact in Indianapolis during Super Bowl XLVI, the growing popularity of Pinterest (along with a quick review), and athletes and social media. Along with this, we’ll have a look at who gets best on ground this week for excellence in combining sports and social media. So sit back and enjoy 2012′s first #bodsw and remember to keep an eye out on my Pinterest site for photos of my very own #sportsgeektrip across America.

Social Media at #SuperBowl XLVI

We know who won Super Bowl XLVI, with the New York Giants’ Eli Manning again being a thorn in Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots’ side, but who won the social media battle from Super Bowl 46? To get an idea of the link between social media and sport, check out this cool info graphic and story on the big dance in Indianapolis earlier this month, which included an unfathomable 5.6 million Super Bowl-related tweets!

Pinterest: Have you started pinning?

Arguably the fastest growing new social media platform on the internet, Pinterest is gaining more users seemingly by the second. With comScore estimating the website gains over 10 million unique viewers monthly, the online pinboard needs to be investigated to see how sporting organisations can incorporate it into their digital marketing strategies. If you aren’t sure what Pinterest is, check out New York Times’ tech columnist David Pogue‘s review on the revolution.

Be sure to check out Sports Geek’s Pinterest page, as well as Sean’s own page for some great sports-related pins. And remember, Pinners, images are the key to pinning items, so find some great images and get pinning.

In case you missed it, Sean was on ABC Grandstand last week with Francis Leach and Amanda Shalala, discussing the growth of Pinterest, and remember to tune into ABC Grandstand at 7:45am  to hear the latest news from the digital sports world.

How not to use Twitter

With Twitter such a huge part of our lives now, including our sporting lives, the US state of Maryland has taken a somewhat radical approach to their student-athletes and Twitter; banning it. Towson University football coach Rob Ambrose has banned his players from tweeting after one of his players tweeted a racial slur before a football game. Check out this list of schools in Maryland, created by WBALTV.com, that have some interesting policies on social media access for athletes.

The AFL and Telstra join forces, leave Optus out

Big news from the AFL  this week with their new deal with Telstra that will allow fans to watch every game this season straight from their smartphone or tablet device. With the NFL, NBA and MLB having such great success with channels such as NFL Game Pass and the NBA’s League Pass, it’s great to see the AFL starting to catch up to the world leaders in online content.

On the other side of the AFL/Telstra deal, rival telecommunications giant Optus is seeking legal action against Andrew Demetriou and the AFL over comments made by the AFL CEO during an interview with the Sunday Herald Sun. Be sure to keep an eye on how this one pans out.

Best on Ground

The first best on ground for 2012 goes to Sports Illustrated for their March Madness Cover Challenge, where readers can enter a competition to get their own picture on the cover of the March 19 edition of the long-running sports magazine. It’s an excellent initiative by an iconic sporting magazine, and one that is sure to excite it’s fans worldwide. Check out Sports Illustrated’s cover challenge on it’s Facebook page now. Entries close March 5th, 2012.

Video of the Week

By now, you’ve probably heard all about Jeremy Lin and all the terrible puns (Linsanity, Lincredible, Super Lintendo, etc.) that have crept into the vocabulary of NBA fans worldwide. If you haven’t heard about the young Harvard graduate who took the road less travelled to the NBA, then check out this video of his game-winner against the Toronto Raptors that sent the Madison Square Garden crowd into a frenzy. Be sure to check out how Sports Geek linked the New York Knicks with a New York-based info graphic artist - all the way from Melbourne. Enjoy!

Connected Real Madrid, LeBron & KD & Google+ Brandjacking

Welcome to another huge week of #BODSW. This week, we’re bringing you some great developments from Real Madrid, LeBron James, Kevin Durant (again), and much, much more. Without further ado, here is this week’s edition of #BODSW.

Real Madrid fans to be connected

We start in Spain at Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. The La Liga super club is set for a European first, as they plan to activate a new, high density Wi-Fi system in the stadium that fans can use while watching Real strut their stuff.

NBA Stars turn YouTube stars?

Over to the United States now, with NBA superstars Kevin Durant and LeBron James utilising social media throughout the NBA lockout to stay engaged with fans and grow their personal brands. The duo have started a webcast entitled, “Striving for Greatness”, where the two work out together to improve their games for whenever the NBA gets past it’s labour dispute.

Stay tuned on LeBron James YouTube Channel for more episodes.

Twitter & journalism

Hitting social media now, with Poynter publishing a brilliant read about journalists, Twitter, and the professional dangers associated with retweeting. Definitely worth a read, even if just to pick up tips about Twitter etiquette.

Aussies web stats

If stats are your thing, check out the ABS’ latest work on internet activity in Australia, with some great numbers coming out regarding the availability of broadband internet in Australia.

Google+ & Brandjacking

We look at Google+ next, with an article about fake pages, like the ones we see on Twitter, with TPM having published a story about a fake Google+ page for Bank of America, that has been set up and is trashing one of America’s largest companies.

Best on Ground

BOG this week is the giant video wall where people can try and match the speed of the New York City marathoners for 60 yards, just to see the amazing speeds that these professional marathoners can sustain for some 26.2 miles.  Do you think you can keep up with Ryan Hall?

Video of the Week

NFL linebackers are a special, violent breed of footballer. Not many are better at what they do that the Dallas Cowboys’ DeMarcus Ware. Check out the super slo-mo video of, “The Anatomy of a Sack”, brought to you by Red Bull.
